I will provide specific guidance on obtaining a tourist visa for a family intending to visit New Delhi.
Scenario
I will explain the process for three applicants (Father, Mother, Child).
Check List
- Application forms.
Each applicant (3 in this case) must fill separate application. This can be filled online and you have to take color printout after you completed the form. You can download the form once it’s completed.

- Bank Statement
Last 3 months bank statements needed for each applicants. If one applicant sponsoring to the entire family he/she should prepare a sponsor letter for other applicants as well.
Also copy of his/her bank statement & his/her passport should attach to other applicants.
Last time I checked (2022-10-01) IVS requested minimum of 50,000 LKR balance maintained in your accounts.
You should not add sudden deposits prior to apply VISA.- Father (ex: Father sponsor for all the family members I believe there should be 150,000 LKR (3 * 50,000 LKR in this case) balance since there is a minimum balance declared in their requirements.)

- Child (I have included sponsoring details in No Objection letter. So separate sponsor letter not necessary for the child)
- Original Passports & Previous Passports
- Father
- Mother

- Photocopies of passports (these will be attached to child’s application)
- Father (Fathers passport copy)
- Mother (If Father sponsoring his passport copy should be attached with Mother’s passport copy)
- Child (Father, Mother and Child passport copies should be attach)
- 2×2″ color photographs of all applicants.
- Should be taken in white background
- 2 hard copies from each applicant. You need to hand over these to IVS along with the application forms
- Soft copies also needed to upload while filling the VISA application
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) or some say No Objection Letter
e-visa is not available for Sri Lankan at the moment. Please go with Regular/Paper visa
Make the appointment at IVS for submitting VISA applications before 5 days prior to your departure. Sooner it’s better. It’s not very difficult to obtain visa for india but you have to plan accordingly.
Try not to book any flights or hotels in India before obtaining VISA.
Don’t make any mistakes. If so Indian Visa Center will ask you to re do the application. Take your time before printing the form.
Filling the application form
Goto https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/index.html and click on Regular/Paper Visa application (https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/Registration)
You can start filling the data and click continue the first page. Next page onwards you can click save and continue.
You will see a Temporary Number on top of the page. Keep it safe so you can later continue the same form instead of starting a new application again.
Once you are on the last page where you can see all the details that you have entered, DO NOT CLICK click continue or go forward. If you do it will download the Application form and you cannot edit if there any mistake. Take a moment, carefully go through with the spellings, numbers and check them against the original documents.
If you need a break you can close the window. Once your are back go to https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/CompletePartially
This is where you have to enter that Temporary Number and you can continue the application with preserved data.

I will highlight some of the fields that I think which is important.
- Use block letters (Capital letters) to fill the application
- Names and surnames should be according to your passport. use the passport order to fill the details
- If its not applicable type NA
- If the child is very small select NA BEING MINOR for education.
- I have used Driving license as my identification document. It’s in english and you can use new ID card as well.

Process
- Make an appointment through https://appointments.ivsvisalanka.com/index_one_step.php by filling the details
- Arrange the documents according to Final Checklist above
- Visit the IVS by your appointment time and enter to the premises showing or telling you have an application submission appointment to the guard. There are no parking available in Colombo office so be you have to park your car beside the road. Not near the IVS but you can find a spot if you go little further.
- Go inside and show your applications to the reception and he/she will inspect them and will give you an token number (if everything in place) and point you to go to another location.
- You have to wait until your number has been called. I waited 1 hour since I made a mistake and I came at last minute (by 12 PM). So I waited around 1 hour till my number has called.
- One of the person in the counter will call you and he will register your application. They ask for a mobile and you will receive the sms after they entered the application to the system and passport collection time
- After everything completed you have to pay them and you will get some receipts. Keep them safe until you get your passports
- After 2 days I received a sms for passport collection. Passport collection time is 4PM to 5PM. You have to go there again show the receipts and you can get your passports from them. Thats it.
Remember IVS will not issue another copy of the invoices so don’t lose it if you need it. Happened to me they just simply said NO. I am not happy with that all.
There are professional services available for this job so you don’t have to spend time to go all above steps. They will ask what they want and they will do the rest. Its easy but will take little extra money.
